Transit Tips

Someone told me as I have travelled a lot that I should put together some tips to help those that haven't. If there is anything you would like included send me a message.
GPS in hire cars?
  • Yes do it and pay for it if you want to save your relationship and your children's ears from swearing. For those wanting to just get in a car and go after a long flight and haven't yet worked out their global roaming or Google Maps (huge downloading costs) go the GPS hire in the car. Just make sure it is in your native tongue - unlike one adventure of ours in Spain where we couldn't change it (nor the hire car company)! #crashcourseinspainish

Car seats on planes for toddlers?
  • Yes do it! Deal with lugging it though an airport, and the arguments with check-in staff and cabin crew. For 13 hour long haul flights over the years I would never have made it without it - especially travelling solo. It was a win-win - for me, other passengers and for the kid who is used to been buckled in other moving transport. They can sleep, eat and see tv screens.  And when you reach your destination you are ready to plug it in to the first car you hop into.

Should I keep my toddler/kids awake longer in the hope they will fall asleep on a plane?
  • Never! Opposite effect happens when they are delirious and crazy. Try to pick flights that match their sleep patterns - e.g. early morning flights.
Jetlag tips
  • It takes time. It takes staying awake longer and trying to adapt straight into the local time.  Found that some chicken and corn soup in San Franciso China Town helped go the extra mile after a long haul flight from Australia one time.  Any other suggestions you might add?
