What does it mean to be a Third Culture Kid?

Transit conversations

One of my first transit conversations I am working on (video editing is not my expertise) is with a good friend of mine who is the classic case of a TCK - a third culture kid. Third culture kids are those who haven't been raised in their parents culture or of one different to their passport.

Nicholla was born in Scotland but her family moved to Dubai when she was two. Apart from her university days back in Scotland she has grown up, established a career, gotten married and given birth to her own child while living in the Middle East.

For her interview we took a trip down memory lane and visited old Dubai - a place where she remembers shopping for grocery items in the souks with her parents before all the glamour super malls and highways were built.

We ate dosa and drank chi - things from India which made up part of Dubai and Nicholla's youth. We took the abra boats across the creek - the main hub of early Dubai trading and visited her old drinking stomping ground.

First item of the day - chi.
Playing tourist in the town she grew up in.
Catching up in Dubai.
Yummy masala dosa
Ready for lunch in this Indian restaurant.
English pubs of her youth
Coffee museum.
Arabic coffee and dates.
We finished roaming around the Bastikiya district, an old Medina which has been re-born with art galleries, museums and boutique hotels. Here we drank arabic coffee and ate dates at the coffee museum and solved the issues of the world while having a giggle.

There is a follow-up in the works where we will capture Nicholla as she adjusts to life now in the country of her birth.

Stay tuned!
